VHB’s Providence Office is seeking a talented mid-level traffic engineer/designer to join our Transportation Systems team in Rhode Island in support of the Traffic Signal and Transportation Technology discipline. The selected candidate will work with a team of traffic engineers and transportation planners on the planning, design and construction support of traditional and advanced traffic signals, connected vehicle and smart technology initiatives, advanced transportation technology infrastructure and traditional and smart work zone design and implementations.
With a background in transportation technology and/or traffic signal design, you’ll be eager to advance your experience and will relish the chance to push your technical expertise. You’ll want to develop real-world solutions that solve our clients’ problems, while improving the communities in which we live. You will be constantly encouraged to build your skills through on-the-job training on a variety of transportation technology and traffic signal system projects.
Responsibilities
Support development of Traffic Signal Design Plans and Specifications for state and municipal clients
Assist in developing design plans and technical specifications for a variety of transportation technology hardware and software elements including signal control, communications and video detection systems.
Support developing technology components of Temporary Traffic Control Plans (TTCP), including traditional and smart work zones and construction phase service planning for state, municipal and private clients
Perform engineering field work (field equipment testing/inspections, traffic signal and infrastructure verification, operational reviews, and traffic signal retiming)
Writing and updating specifications for traffic signal systems
Preparing written documents (memoranda, reports, plans), summarizing data and analysis, and assembling reports to convey findings and recommendations.
Interest in continuing to remain up to date and current with trends in transportation technology
Skills and Attributes
Familiarity with intersection designs, including traffic signal timing plans, traffic control devices, roundabouts, and multimodal facilities preferred.
Familiarity/or strong passion to learn, design and technical specifications for various traffic signal systems such as type 170, type 179, 2070, NEMA TS-1, NEMA TS2, type 1, NEMA TS2, type 2 and ATC cabinet platforms.
Familiarity to comprehend design and construction specifications and plans preferred
Familiarity with some of the following applications: AutoCAD/MicroStation, Synchro, GIS, Excel, Word, or similar
Familiarity with transportation standards and guidance, specific State DOTs
Willingness to work outdoors on project sites
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering preferred, or equivalent in a related discipline
5-8 years of professional experience required, preferably related to traffic signal design or maintenance; 8+ years’ experience preferred.
A desire to expand your experience including planning, design, and construction of transportation technology equipment and/or communications systems (cellular, fiber, wireless)
Ideally have experience developing civil design and construction documents – preference given for state DOT experience
Valid driver’s license and ability/willingness to travel on occasion
PE License expected or the ability to obtain within 6 months
Relocation would be considered for highly qualified candidates
