The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. In addition, City of Ames Civil Service employees who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must submit their application by the deadline.
The qualified candidate supervises and performs work related to the maintenance, installation, and servicing of a variety of electrical transmission and distribution facilities; performs related work as required.
Examples of Essential Job Functions
Supervises and participates in all work performed by the substation crew including installation, maintenance, and repair of de-energized lines, grounding circuits, and operating switch connects or disconnects; ensures proper installation of protective devices; arranges for clearances; checks, inspects, and maintains materials, tools, and equipment and arranges for their transportation to project sites; responsible for the observance of safety rules and regulations, on the job training, and safe and effective use of equipment by employees under his or her direction; directs and takes part in checking completed work, observing workmanship, and ensuring appropriate connections; corrects and directs correction of malfunctions and abnormalities; recommends modifications, revisions, and improvements in facilities, procedures, and methods; maintains inventory of specialized parts and equipment for substations; provides input and recommendations for budgetary expenditures; installs and maintains communication cable for SCADA systems; operates laptop computer; operates digger derrick, bucket trucks, pickup trucks, and related equipment.

Education and Experience: Completion of a recognized substation electrician apprenticeship program and three years of electric substation experience as a journey level Substation Electrician.
Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid driver's license; must obtain a valid type A Commercial Driver's License and any required endorsements within one month of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in electrical construction, installation, and repair; knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits, wiring systems, and transformer hookups; Knowledge and skill in the use of a wide variety of electrical testing devices including volt meters, ammeters, ohm meters, watt meters, fault locators, meggers and other devices; knowledge of the construction and function of a wide variety of electrical equipment used in power generation and transmission such as transformers, motors, electric pumps, and related equipment; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of the electrical trade and of necessary safety precautions; knowledge of first-aid and CPR; knowledge of all safety rules as stated in the adopted safety manual.
Considerable skill in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment; considerable skill in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the electrical trade; skill in planning and supervising the work of others.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; considerable ability to read and interpret electrical sketches, diagrams, and blueprints; considerable ability to make estimates of project time and materials; ability to supervise; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, supervisors, co-workers, other City employees, and contractors; ability to operate laptop computer, digger derrick, bucket trucks, pickup trucks, and related equipment.
Completion of a recognized substation electrician apprenticeship program and three years of electric substation experience as a journey level Substation Electrician is required.
