The Department of Civil and Materials Engineering (CME) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the field of structural engineering. Opening is at the Full Professor or Associate Professor level with a proven track record of research and funding. Areas of expertise include but are not limited to: experimental testing of large-scale structures; large-scale innovative design and testing; multi-functional materials testing in large scale; hazard mitigation technologies and designs or related areas. CME’s strategic plans recommends further growth by investing in opportunities for leadership in large-scale innovative structural testing in the Chicago area. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be the director of CME’s newly constructed High Bay Structures Laboratory which is located in the College of Engineering’s recently completed Engineering Innovation Building (EIB). The laboratory dimensions are 60 feet wide, 100 feet long, and 45 feet clearance height. The entire lab is a large 6’ deep heavily reinforced strong floor and supports a 30 feet high L-shaped strong wall. The departmental faculty members are highly involved in conducting collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
The CME Department has a vibrant civil and materials engineering program. Faculty members in the Department are highly active in conducting cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research. Opportunities are available to collaborate with UIC’s other departments, including Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Bio Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Medicine, and Physics. The successful candidate is expected to build a strong collaboration with other CME and COE faculty.
The Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering, MS degree in Construction Engineering and Management and MS and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering, and currently has an undergraduate enrollment of about 360 and a graduate enrollment of about 200. Successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong sponsored research program, teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, and advise students. The successful candidate will be expected to perform interdisciplinary research, interface with industry, federal, state, local, national labs, and other governmental agencies to attract external funds for support of research, and to actively contribute to internal and external professional service.
The successful candidate will possess an earned PhD in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program specialized in large-scale structural testing with a strong record of publications in prestigious journals, potential to secure external funding and experience in teaching structural design and analyses courses. Consideration priority will also be given to the candidates who are registered Professional Engineers (PE) or they are on track to obtain their PE licensure within one year of employment.
