The Graduate Engineer Trainee Program is a unique, 2-year training program that provides new MnDOT engineers with the opportunity to really “get to know” the department before beginning a permanent position. The Graduate Engineer Trainee Program is designed to provide Trainees with practical, work experience through formal job rotations within various engineering sections of MnDOT. Trainees will rotate through a variety of areas to ensure they benefit from exposure to a broad background of engineering. These rotational experiences help trainees expand their technical, managerial and human relations skills through formal on-the-job training. The program also familiarizes trainees with MnDOT’s organizational structure, goals, policies and personnel.
This vacancy posting will be used to fill Trainee, Engineer Graduate positions in MnDOT’s Graduate Engineer Program. Homebase offices may be located any where in the state and include areas like: Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, Mankato/Windom, Rochester/Owatonna or Willmar. The selected Trainee(s) will begin employment sometime between January, 2020 and June, 2020, once all educational requirements have been met. Upon successful completion of the two (2) year training program, the Trainee will be permanently assigned to a position within their homebase.
To successfully complete the program, a Trainee must: 1) Complete two (2) years of professional engineering experience; 2) Obtain Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) registration; 3) Demonstrate satisfactory performance in all rotations; 4) Complete all required rotations; and 5) Complete 20 hours of recruitment, STEM outreach or public engagement volunteer service. Once all criteria are met, the Trainee will be non-competitively converted to a permanent, probationary Engineer 2 Graduate position.
All Trainees must become a registered, Professional Engineer within 6 years of being appointed as a Trainee, no exceptions. Failure to do so will result in termination.

To qualify for the MnDOT Graduate Engineer Program, applicants must possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil, Construction or Geotechnical Engineering from an ABET accredited university by the date of hire. If the selected candidate has not yet obtained their Bachelor’s degree, all offers of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of this educational requirement.

If you meet the degree requirement, applicants may be further evaluated for a potential interview based on the following: (1) Applicant’s GPA; (2) An advanced degree in civil, construction or geotechnical engineering; (3) Possession of the Fundamentals of Engineering registration or a Professional Engineer’s license; or (4) Engineering related work experience; and (5) Previous MnDOT experience.
