The Department of Civil Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science was established in the year 1950 and has grown over the years into one of the finest centers of advanced research and training in the field of civil engineering.
What started as a mere section of the then Power Engineering Department of the Institute on 24th July 1950, soon became a full fledged Department of Civil and Hydra...ulic Engineering due to the vision and dynamism of Prof. N. S. Govinda Rao. The name of the Department was later changed to Civil Engineering in 1972.
The Department has been in the forefront of advanced research in Civil Engineering and has also been very pro-active in industrial interaction and technology development.
The Department is recognized as a Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) by the University Grants Commission, a Center of Excellence in Water Resources by the Central Board for Irrigation and Power.
