The City of Roanoke is seeking applications from dynamic and innovative professionals for the Director of General Services and Sustainability position. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing all professional and administrative activities related to facilities management, custodial services, purchasing, fleet maintenance, risk management as well as leading sustainability activities within the organization and the community. Sustainability encompasses a focus on reducing carbon emissions, energy efficiency, use of alternative fuels, transportation alternatives, and community outreach and education. Therefore, responsibilities will include accountability based on measurable cost effective results for the substance, efficiency, productivity and quality of activities performed within assigned divisions.
The Director will be responsible for managing 4 division managers who supervise approximately 90 employees in Facilities Management, Fleet Management, Purchasing and Risk Management. S/he will also be responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these divisions. S/he will directly supervise the Sustainability Coordinator position and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Additional responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with a major in business, public administration; and five to ten years of related management experience in building, maintenance, fleet operations, purchasing, or general city/county administration; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
